How business & management funding works in South Africa
Commerce, business management, marketing, supply chain and media funding comes mostly from retailers, banks, logistics groups, insurers and media houses. These bursaries are often smaller than engineering awards but are attached to graduate programmes, which makes the employment pathway after graduation the most valuable part of the offer.
The graduate programme is the real prize
Many commerce bursaries lead into a structured graduate or trainee programme. When comparing offers, weigh the placement, rotation structure and mentoring as heavily as the rand value of the tuition.
Specialisation improves your odds
A general BCom competes with a very large applicant pool. Supply chain, logistics, risk management, retail operations and business analytics attract fewer applicants relative to demand, and funders name those specialisations explicitly.
Commercial applications are assessed commercially
Expect competency questions, online assessments and sometimes a group exercise. Prepare concrete examples of leadership, teamwork and problem-solving from school, work or community activity rather than general statements about your ambition.
Questions students ask about business & management funding
- Do retailers and banks fund studies at universities of technology?
- Many do, particularly for diplomas in retail, logistics and business management. Each listing states the study levels and, where the funder publishes them, the institutions covered.
