The South African Bursary Year: When to Apply for What
Written by the SA Bursary Hub Editorial Team · Published on · 6 min read
A month-by-month view of the South African funding year: when most bursaries open and close, when NSFAS and university applications usually run, and how to plan around it.
Use this as a planning guide, not a deadline list
Funders set their own dates and change them. Treat the pattern below as a way to plan your year, and confirm every actual date on the funder's official application page or on the listing for that opportunity.
January to March: finish the current cycle, start the next
Early in the year, late-cycle bursaries for the current academic year are still being finalised and some funders run a second round. This is also the time to get your document pack in order: certified ID copies, your latest results, proof of income and proof of registration. Postgraduate calls for the following year often appear from around this point.
April to July: the busiest opening season
Many corporate and foundation bursaries for the following academic year open in this window, and a large share of them close before spring. If you only check bursary sites in November, you will have missed most of them. Set a weekly slot in your diary through this period and work through a shortlist.
August to October: closing season and university applications
This is when most closing dates fall, and it usually overlaps with university and TVET application deadlines for the following year. Submit early, because portals struggle under load in the final days. NSFAS applications for the following academic year typically open in this part of the year, but confirm the current opening and closing dates on the official NSFAS site.
November to December: results, offers and late opportunities
Many funders confirm offers only after final results are released. Keep checking your email and the portal you applied through, and respond quickly to any request for documents. A smaller number of bursaries and late learnership intakes open in this window.
All year: learnerships, apprenticeships and rolling calls
Work-based programmes do not follow the academic calendar as closely. Intakes open when a company needs them, sometimes at short notice. If you are open to a learnership or apprenticeship, check those pages regularly rather than once a year.
