Keeping Your Bursary: Renewal Conditions and What to Do If You Struggle

Written by the SA Bursary Hub Editorial Team · Published on · 6 min read

What South African bursaries typically require to renew funding each year, how to stay on the right side of the conditions, and what to do if your results slip.

Funding is usually annual, not once-off

Most bursaries are awarded for one academic year and renewed if you meet the conditions in your agreement. Read your own agreement to see exactly what renewal depends on and by when you must submit results. Conditions differ by funder, and the agreement, not general advice, is what applies to you.

Conditions funders commonly set

The specifics vary, but the categories below appear in many agreements. Where your agreement is unclear, ask the bursary administrator in writing.

  • A minimum average or a minimum number of modules passed per year
  • Progressing to the next year of study without excessive repeats
  • Remaining registered full-time in the funded qualification
  • Reporting a change of course, institution or personal circumstances
  • Vacation work, mentorship or reporting requirements for some corporate funders
  • Maintaining conduct standards set by the institution or funder

Keep the administrator informed

Bursary administrators deal with problems better when they hear about them early and directly from you. If you are ill, have a family emergency, need to change modules or are at risk of failing, tell them before results are published rather than after. Put it in writing and keep the correspondence.

If your results slip

Use the institution's own support first: academic development, tutoring, the writing centre, the disability unit if relevant, and student counselling. Then ask the funder what its process is where a student does not meet the renewal condition. Some funders have a review or appeal step; others do not. Ask rather than assume.

Watch the money side

Confirm what your bursary pays and when, keep an eye on your fee statement, and query differences early. If an allowance stops, ask the administrator in writing what changed. Never let a fee account drift without speaking to the institution.

Plan for the year after

If your bursary covers only part of your qualification, start looking for the next source of funding well before the current one ends. The application seasons described in our bursary calendar apply to continuing students too, and many funders accept applications from students already in their studies.
