How computer science & it funding works in South Africa
IT and computer science funding in South Africa comes from three directions: banks and insurers building internal development capacity, telecoms and technology companies, and SETA or public programmes aimed at scarce digital skills. Awards range from full-cost degree bursaries to shorter learnerships that combine a qualification with paid workplace experience.
Degree, diploma and learnership routes are funded differently
A BSc Computer Science or BCom Informatics bursary is normally a multi-year tuition award. A digital learnership is a workplace programme with a stipend and an NQF-registered qualification. They suit different applicants, so decide which route you want before applying.
Funders look for evidence, not just marks
Technology funders increasingly ask for something you have built or contributed to: a small project, a GitHub profile, a school robotics or coding club, or a completed online course. Prepare one short, honest paragraph describing what you made and what you learned.
Check the institution list carefully
Some IT bursaries fund only public universities, others include universities of technology and a small number of accredited private providers. If you are studying at a TVET college or private institution, confirm accreditation and eligibility before applying.
Questions students ask about computer science & it funding
- Is Mathematics compulsory for IT bursaries?
- Most degree-level IT bursaries require pure Mathematics because the degree itself does. Some diploma and learnership routes accept Mathematical Literacy. The requirement is listed on each opportunity where the funder states it.
