How accounting & finance funding works in South Africa
Accounting and finance is the best-organised bursary market in the country. The Thuthuka Bursary Fund, audit firms, banks, insurers and asset managers all fund students on the CA(SA), actuarial and quantitative finance pathways, usually with mentoring, vacation work and an articles or graduate-programme placement attached.
The CA(SA) route has fixed academic checkpoints
Funding for a SAICA-accredited BCom Accounting is normally conditional on passing all modules each year and progressing to CTA. Understand the academic conditions attached to renewal, because a failed year can convert a bursary into a loan or end it entirely.
Actuarial funding follows exam exemptions
Actuarial bursaries typically monitor your progress towards Actuarial Society of South Africa exemptions, not just your degree average. Some funders pay exam fees and study leave; check whether that support continues after graduation.
Financial need is assessed as strictly as marks
Several accounting funds, including Thuthuka, apply both an academic threshold and a household income test. Prepare payslips, affidavits for unemployed parents, death certificates where relevant, and a clear household summary, since incomplete financial documents are a common reason applications stall.
Questions students ask about accounting & finance funding
- Can I get an accounting bursary if I did Mathematical Literacy?
- SAICA-accredited accounting degrees require pure Mathematics, so most CA(SA) bursaries do too. Diploma-level accounting and bookkeeping routes may accept Mathematical Literacy; check the qualification requirements on each listing.
