How to Prepare Before a Bursary Application Opens

Written by the SA Bursary Hub Editorial Team · Published on · 5 min read

Most of the work that wins a bursary happens before the window opens. A preparation plan for documents, results, references and your written material.

Build the document pack in advance

Certifying documents, requesting a proof of income letter or waiting for a school to reissue a report all take days you will not have once a portal opens. Scan each document as a clear, correctly named PDF and keep the originals together in one physical folder.

Get your written material ready early

A motivational letter written the night before a deadline reads like one. Draft yours while you have time, ask a teacher, lecturer or someone whose writing you trust to read it, and keep a version you can adapt per funder rather than reusing it unchanged.

Line up your references

If a funder asks for a reference, ask the person weeks in advance and give them your CV, the programme name and the deadline. Confirm the contact details they want used, and tell them when you have submitted so an unexpected call does not catch them cold.

Track the cycle

Note when each funder opened last year, follow their official pages, and set your own reminder a few weeks before. Our bursary application calendar guide sets out how the South African cycle generally runs, and the closing-soon page shows what is open right now.
