Understand your APS

Most South African universities use an Admission Point Score (APS) calculated from your best six matric subjects (usually excluding Life Orientation). Each programme sets a minimum APS plus subject requirements — for example Mathematics rather than Mathematical Literacy for engineering and science.

Apply early and apply widely

University applications generally open in April and close between June and September for the following year, well before matric results are released. Apply to at least three institutions and list a realistic second-choice programme at each.

What you will need

• Certified copy of your ID
• Grade 11 final results and Grade 12 mid-year results
• Application fee (some institutions waive it during open periods)
• Proof of payment and contact details for a parent or guardian

Applying to TVET colleges

TVET colleges offer NC(V) and Report 191 (NATED) programmes with strong practical, employable skills, and are fully NSFAS-fundable. They accept applications later than universities, which makes them a solid option if you miss university deadlines.

If you are not accepted

Consider late applications and the central applications clearing process, a bridging or higher-certificate programme, or upgrading your matric results through a rewrite. None of these close the door on funding — most bursaries accept students entering through these routes.
