How to Find Bursaries Based on Your Province

Written by the SA Bursary Hub Editorial Team · Published on · 5 min read

Province matters in South African funding. Learn which funders restrict by province, how residence is proved, and how to search provincial opportunities properly.

Why province appears in so many criteria

Provincial government departments, municipalities and regionally based companies fund students from the communities they serve, and some ask you to work in that province afterwards. Other funders are national and place no location restriction at all. Reading which of the two you are looking at saves a lot of wasted effort.

Home province, study province, or both

A listing that says Limpopo may mean you must be resident in Limpopo, or that the opportunity is placed there, or that it funds study at an institution in that province. Where a funder states this clearly we show it; where they do not, treat the official page as the deciding source and ask before applying.

Proving where you live

Provincial schemes usually want documentary proof rather than a statement. Prepare it early so a location requirement never costs you a deadline.

  • Proof of residence such as a municipal bill, or an affidavit where you do not receive bills in your name
  • Your ID, and often a parent or guardian's ID showing the same address
  • A letter from a school, traditional authority or ward councillor where a funder accepts one

Search both ways

Filter by your province to find local schemes, then run the same search with all provinces selected. National funders often outnumber provincial ones and are easy to miss if you only ever filter locally. The province filter on the bursaries and opportunities pages does exactly this.
