Humanities & Social Sciences Opportunities

Opportunities for students in psychology, social work, politics, languages, communication and media.

About this study field

Humanities and social sciences opportunities are usually offered by universities, foundations, media houses and development organisations. Funding is less common than in the technical fields, and postgraduate scholarships make up a large share of what is available, so it is worth checking the closing dates on this page regularly.

The funding landscape in Humanities & Social Sciences

Humanities and social sciences cover the work that keeps schools, courts, clinics, newsrooms and communities functioning, yet funding here is scattered across many small providers rather than concentrated in a few large corporate schemes. Social work is the clearest exception: the national and provincial departments of social development fund social work students because the country has a recognised shortage of registered practitioners, and those bursaries usually carry a placement obligation in a public service post after graduation. Psychology funding tends to appear at honours and masters level, where limited training places make funded internships valuable, while languages, history, philosophy and development studies are mostly supported by university merit awards, research foundations and international exchange programmes. Media, journalism and communication students should watch broadcasters, publishers and the media and advertising SETA, which run learnerships and cadet programmes that pay a stipend alongside training. Because so much of this funding is advertised departmentally rather than nationally, the listings on this page will always be fewer than in engineering or commerce. Treat your university financial-aid office, your department noticeboard and NSFAS as your first stops, and use this page for the employer-linked and foundation opportunities we can verify against an official source.
