Law Opportunities
Opportunities for LLB and postgraduate law students, and for candidate legal practitioners.
About this study field
Law funding in South Africa is offered by law firms, corporate legal departments, universities and public-interest organisations. Some listings fund the LLB itself while others support postgraduate specialisation or practical vocational training, so read the official notice to see which stage of study is covered.
The funding landscape in Law
Law is one of the smallest funded study fields in South Africa, and that is a reflection of how the profession recruits rather than of how many students need help. Firms tend to invest at the candidate-attorney stage, paying for practical vocational training and the board exams once a graduate has already been offered articles, so far fewer awards are advertised for first-year LLB students than for engineering or accounting. The support that does exist for undergraduates usually comes from three places: university merit and financial-aid offices, which run their own faculty awards; legal trusts and family foundations, which often advertise quietly through law faculties rather than publicly; and public-interest bodies such as legal aid organisations, human rights centres and constitutional litigation units, which look for students with clinic, moot court or community-advice-office experience. Postgraduate law funding is broader, with LLM and doctoral scholarships attached to research chairs, tax and commercial law programmes and international exchange agreements. If nothing here matches you yet, the most productive route is to speak to your faculty bursary officer, register on the recruitment portals of the large commercial firms so that you are contacted when vacation-work and articles cycles open, and keep your academic record strong, because almost every law award is decided on marks first.
